  • TAFE Statement Community Nutrition Workshop

    800-001070

The objective of this program is to empower the community to obtain a safe, culturally acceptable, nutritious diet through a sustainable food system that maximises healthy choices, community self-reliance, and equal access for everyone. To attain this aim despite recent environmental crises like droughts, floods and isolation (with Covid19 pandemic) contributing to problems of food insecurity, poverty and environmental degradation. Complementarity – This program seeks to leverage existing projects involving the Native Grain initiative for greater community self-reliance (partnership building). The one day workshop will provide knowledge centred on 1. Dietary guidelines, what constitutes nutritional adequacy for the children / teenager / adult / pregnant adult/ elderly with particular emphasis on requirements relevant to life-stage. 2. Access to food supplies (growing and utilising native foods and collaboration with local communities growing native foods), utilising minimal households’ infrastructure for cooking and safe storage of foods. 3. Enhancing skills in planning, acquiring, preparation and safe handling / storage of food. 4. Safe handling and storage of food will be emphasised in activity. The practical component will involve the preparation of a meal suggestion that will be prepared by participants who will then sit down and enjoy cooked food with a healthy beverage of choice like a herbal tea made from herbs harvested from the community garden (mint tea for example). At the end of the session, participants will complete workshop evaluation and facilitator will get expression of interest in further training.
