Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:

Find faults on live 440V marine electrical boards and understand high voltage safety

A willingness to have an interview with one of our teaching staff to discuss your experience and arrange an individual learning plan
During your study you’ll need to provide your teacher with the following evidence:
A Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills test and achieve a score of 6 across the five bands of literacy and 6 across one band of numeracy. This skills test helps us to understand your individual study needs and to provide you with the appropriate support for your study success.
To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:
A Diploma of Marine Engineering (Engineer Watchkeeper) or equivalent
An intermediate level of fitness and the ability to swim 5 metres and stay afloat for 5 minutes
A resistance to acute ocean sickness
The ability to provide your own work clothes, including include overalls, protective eyewear, closed work shoes and sun protection for practical sessions

The Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA) sets specific requirements for each maritime qualification to ensure you are ready to join the industry. After graduating from this course, you will be able to apply for Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certification oral examinations in Engineer Class 1 (STCW Chief Engineer Unlimited) and Engineer Class 2 (STCW Second Engineer Unlimited)/ When you receive your certificate of competency you will be able to work as a chief engineer officer in international waters. Graduating from this course only meets part of the AMSA exam criteria. You will need to meet other requirements including minimum age, minimum professional sea time hours and medical and eyesight assessments which need to be arranged by you. Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Advanced Diploma of Marine Engineering (Class 1) (Engineer Class 1 - Motor) qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 14 Units of competency, including 13 core and 1 speciality units.
Please note, not all specialty units are offered at every TAFE NSW location. It is highly recommended that you check with your preferred campus for information about the specialty units offered at that location.
