Non-apprenticeship

• Non-apprenticeship pathways for trade-related qualifications allow you to have your industry skills assessed through recognition of prior learning (RPL) and undertake gap training to gain a trade qualification. To take this course as a non-apprenticeship, you must:

• Be at least 21 years of age, as evidenced by photo identification

• Have at least 2 years of work experience in this occupation or trade, as evidenced by employee records such as your resume and/or letters from your employers

• Be currently employed in the relevant industry, as evidenced by a letter from your employer

Revalidation is the mandatory requirement for those without the required sea-time (qualifying sea service is at least 12 months in total during the preceding 5 years before application, or 3 months in total during the preceding 6 months prior to revalidating). This must be done every 5 years in order to demonstrate continued competence.

• You must be able to provide answers to the following questions and evidence of any certifications or licenses you hold:

• Do you hold a General Purpose Hand qualification or any other Maritime or Engineering / Mechanical trade qualification. If so, please state which qualification/s you hold.

• Are you currently working in the maritime industry?

• Do you have the required sea-time to obtain the AMSA licence?

• Chief engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion less than 750 kW

• Second engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion less than 1500 kW

• Chief or second engineer on vessels with an outboard engine with unlimited propulsion

• Assistant under direct supervision of a chief engineer

• Worker in an engine room of a vessel less than 80m long with propulsion less than 3000 kW

• Successful completion of the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal) or an equivalent or higher qualification as evidenced by a copy of your transcript or certificate

• Before your first day of class you must complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills test and achieve a score of 4 across the Learning, Numeracy and Oral Communcation bands,a score of 3 across the Reading and Writing bands and 2 across one band of Digital Literacy. This helps us to determine that your skills match the demands of the course, to direct you to an alternative study option or to provide you with the appropriate support for your success. Your teacher will let you know when this must be completed.
