    Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:

    • Fight fires onboard a vessel and follow fire reduction procedures

    • You must be able to provide answers to the following questions and evidence of any certifications or licenses you hold:

    • Do you hold a General Purpose Hand qualification or any other Maritime or Engineering / Mechanical trade qualification. If so, please state which qualification/s you hold.

    • Are you currently working in the maritime industry?

    • Do you have the required sea-time to obtain the AMSA licence?

    Entry recommendations

    To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

    • Completed a Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal)

    • A General Purpose Hand qualification or other Maritime or Engineering/Mechanical trade qualification

    • Employment or experience in the maritime industry

    • Seatime required to obtain the AMSA license

    • The ability to swim 50 metres and stay afloat for 5 minutes without a life jacket and in work attire

    • The ability to handle rough seas without getting seasick

    • Learning, reading, writing, literacy, and numeracy competencies at an Australian Year 10 level

    Our graduates go onto roles like: Chief engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion less than 750 kW, Second engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion less than 1500 kW, Chief or second engineer on vessels with an outboard engine with unlimited propulsion, Assistant under direct supervision of a chief engineer and Worker in an engine room of a vessel less than 80m long with propulsion less than 3000 kW

    Licensing

    The maritime industry is regulated by the Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA). Once you graduate from your TAFE NSW course, you will be assessed against the relevant requirements through an AMSA examination process.
