    This course is designed for holders of an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) issued Certificate of Competency (Master and Deck Officers) who do not hold the qualifying sea service to revalidate, and need to complete a revalidation course.

    • Develop electronic passage planning

    • Work on electronic chart display and identification systems

    • Navigate and handle the ship using a simulator

    • Use electronic navigation including navigation systems for bridge equipment and resource management

    • Revise collision regulations (COLREGS)

    • A Certificate of Attendance

    • The ability to revalidate your Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency

    • A valid or expired Australian Master or Deck Officer certificate of competency as evidenced by a copy of your certificate of competency.

    • AND

    • Successful completion of the TAFE Statement in Marine Deck Revalidation - Part A as evidenced by a copy of your certificate

    Entry recommendations

    To be prepared for this course, we recommend you have:

    • Awareness of the AMSA certification requirements and additional payment of $2150 for the revalidation of your certificate of competency

    • Intermediate level fitness to manage physical demands

    • The ability to swim 50 metres and stay afloat for 5 minutes without a life jacket

    • Relevant employment or access to appropriate simulated workplace environments to prove your skills

    • The ability to work with people in difficult situations and circumstances

    • Good organisational skills and the ability to multitask and respond well to rapid change

    Licensing

    The maritime industry is regulated by the Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA). AMSA sets specific requirements for each maritime qualification to ensure you are ready to join the industry. Once you graduate from your TAFE NSW course, you will be assessed against the relevant requirements through an AMSA examination process. Graduating from this course only meets part of the AMSA exam criteria. You will need to meet other requirements through your professional sea service and medical status. AMSA licensing requirements include: - Minimum age requirements when applying for your AMSA certificate - Medical and eyesight requirements - Minimum valid sea time hours To work in the industry you will need a certificate of competency authorised by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
