This short course will give you the skills to take your maritime career to the next level as a limited compass adjuster. Learn how to adjust magnetic compasses on vessels less than 45 metres and gain the experience you need for AMSA licensing.

Learning outcomes
Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:
Explain principles of magnets, magnetism, magnetic fields, terrestrial magnetism, ship’s magnetism, magnetic compass design and magnetic compass construction
Prepare for work by removing or securing movable magnetic materials in the locality of the compass in accordance with workplace procedures
Physically inspect a compass and binnacle in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and workplace procedures using the appropriate tools, equipment and techniques
Analyse records in the ship's compass deviation book to determine if any changes have been made to correctors and determine the recent performance of the compass in accordance with workplace procedures
Determine compass deviations due to coefficients as appropriate and adjust the compass using procedures outlined
Complete documentation and record the position of correctors and residual coefficients in accordance with workplace procedures

Entry requirements
This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol
Successful completion of the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal) as evidenced by a copy of your transcript or certificate.
A certificate of competency that permits a person to command a vessel less than 24 metres (Masters less than 24 metres near coastal) or an equivalent certificate as a master recognised by AMSA.

Entry recommendations
To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:
Math skills at a year 12 level or higher including the ability to solve complex formulas and use a calculator
A maritime operations background and entry-level navigation understanding
The time for self-paced study and assessment completion outside of scheduled class times
Awareness of the AMSA certification requirements
Reading and writing skills at a Year 12 level
The ability to prove your skills in an appropriate simulated workplace environment
Basic computer skills

Licensing
During the course, students will have the opportunity to complete a number of compass swings on a vessel that can be used as evidence to apply for AMSA licensing as a limited compass adjuster. Once you graduate from your TAFE NSW course, you will be assessed against the relevant requirements through an AMSA examination process. Graduating from this course only meets part of the AMSA exam criteria. You will need to meet other requirements through your professional sea service and medical status. AMSA licensing requirements include: - Minimum age requirements when applying for your AMSA certificate - Medical and eyesight requirements - Minimum professional sea time hours Visit AMSA for more information.
