With shows such as The Block, Changing Rooms and Selling Houses Australia dominating our TVs, it is no wonder that more and more Australians are inspired and are turning to interior design as their chosen career.

The building industry across NSW is booming especially in the area of residential construction, which means a demand for interior designers. The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show it is currently our economy’s top performing sector and the Housing Industry Association confirms that a record number of new homes were started in 2014/15 (an increase of 16.9 per cent)[1].

According to research by the Australian Government, the number of interior designers grew over the past five years and is expected to grow strongly over the next five years from 14,000 in 2018 to 16,100 by 2023[2].

For Hills resident Wendie Graves interior design was something she was always interested in, but had never pursued.

“I spent my career working in various marketing roles but I decided it was time to do what I was really interested in, so I enrolled in a Statement of Attainment in Visual Merchandising, I wanted to see if I liked it or not, I was immediately hooked!” Wendie said.

“I followed up with a Statement of Attainment in Interior Design which lead to the Diploma of Interior Design. The Diploma class was small which resonated well with me as it allowed for a lot of one-on-one time with the teachers who were amazing and always there to help.”

Six months into her course, Wendie secured a job with a stylist, which not only allowed her to put what she was learning into practice but also gave her valuable industry experience. Fast-forward 12 months, Wendie is now running her own business Vogue Property Styling.

“Everything I learnt at TAFE NSW gave me the skills and knowledge to start my own business. All the lessons and assignments were so relevant; it really helped me to start out in the industry.

“If it’s a career you’re thinking about getting into then I highly recommend getting some study behind you, as well as keeping up with market trends – watch the TV shows, keep an eye on social media as well studying.”
