TAFE NSW Macksville students have put their practical skills to work after collaborating with charity organisation Lifetime Connect to build a cubby house for a local playgroup.

The cubby house was donated to Macksville Family Services playgroup, which is designed to support families in the region by providing them with a safe and caring environment to learn together. 

Alex Petersen, 20, is studying the Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways at TAFE NSW Macksville and has enjoyed developing his practical skills as part of the Taste of Trades class.

“Throughout the course, I’ve been exposed to a variety of different trades including construction and automotive and I’m really looking forward to pursuing a career in the industry,” Mr Peterson said.

“It’s so rewarding to be involved in the process of building the cubby house and donating it to Lifetime Connect. It’s been great for our class to develop our skills while making a difference in the local community.”

Eddie Dangar, Early Years Coordinator at Lifetime Connect, said the cubby house will be used to help children explore their imagination as they prepare for school. 

“The cubby house is a great addition to the Macksville Family Services Playgroup, and best of all, educators can set it up in various ways including as a mud kitchen.

“The supported playgroup is focused on facilitating school-readiness for children under five by providing them with a good footing for their education, while also building and maintaining community connections including with TAFE NSW – where the kids will hopefully study down the track,” Mr Dangar said.
