Successful podcaster Ally Malcolm has switched states to develop her podcast “The Undecided Gen Z” - moving from Melbourne to Sydney to study the Certificate IV in Screen and Media (Radio Broadcasting) at TAFE NSW. 

Ms Malcolm said when she was researching how she could improve her audio production skills and take her podcast to the next level, she found she kept coming back to TAFE NSW.

“I already have a successful podcast with a steady stream of listeners, so I really just wanted to have some more knowledge and the backing of credentials to assist with its progression,” Ms Malcolm said. 

“I chose TAFE NSW because Melbourne didn't have a huge array of courses where I could learn more about radio broadcasting and every time I tried to research institutions that offer what I really wanted; I was continuously brought back to TAFE NSW. 

“The course had everything I was looking for, so a week before the course started, I made the decision to move to Sydney.”

Head Teacher Media, Radio and Journalism, Natalie Pozdeev said that Ally was a welcome addition to the course.

“Melbourne’s loss is Sydney’s gain. Ally brings with her solid skills in podcasting and social media. It’s exciting to help her extend those skills, and to grow into new areas, like presenting radio shows live to air in our professional studios, getting a good grounding in journalism, and building a beautiful website to showcase her media work.”

Ms Malcolm’s podcast development plans have come during an intense boost in podcast listening habits.  

According to PwC, the Australian podcast market is growing rapidly, with monthly downloads up to an incredible 48.7 million in September 2020 compared to 13.2 million in October 2019.

Ms Pozdeev said graduates of the Certificate IV in Screen and Media (Radio Broadcasting) can go on to work in the podcasting industry, or into a range of roles in producing or presenting in radio, TV or online.

“We offer our students a hands-on, practical course in how to make content for a range of media,” Ms Pozdeev said. 

“We teach radio and podcast skills including research, script creation, panel operating and audio production so that our students can present shows live or pre-recorded, and on any platform.”

Ally said the course has helped her bring her podcast aspirations to fruition and is providing her with the tangible skills she needs to turn her passion into a career.

“So far I've found it really rewarding being educated by people who have worked in the industry themselves and have so much knowledge and experience to share.

“TAFE NSW is a great place to gain more knowledge and qualifications that can lead to a career and turn your hobby or interest into a real job.”
