TAFE NSW students from across the state have come together to flex their skills in a boisterous celebration of music and live performance for international Make Music Day 2022.

Make Music Day is a free celebration of music around the world on 21 June. Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, it is now held on the same day in more than 750 cities in 120 countries.

Students from across NSW – from TAFE NSW Nirimba, Ultimo, Eora, Bradfield, St Leonards and Wollongong experienced the joys of live music and performance as they gathered at Mortuary Station in Sydney last week to pre-record music sets to upload to the Make Music Day 2022 website.

Diploma of Music student River Langford says he’s excited to flex his skills live, when he and the River Langford Band perform live at Napoleon Plaza, Wynyard Station as part of a TAFE NSW organised event on Make Music Day, Tuesday 21 June.

“This has been a wonderful chance to get together with my fellow musicians and really take the skills we have learnt in the classroom out on the road,” River said.

“As musicians, all we want to do is become professional and the greatest thing about TAFE NSW is that all of our teachers are trained, professional musicians who have walked the road and are still out there performing gigs.

“The venue is amazing, we’ve been out to Wynyard Station to check it out and the reverberation is so cool. It’s going to be a really exciting gig.”

In the spirit of collaboration, screen and media students from TAFE NSW St Leonards were on hand to assist filming  pre-recorded music segments for the Make Music Day website last week. Students from TAFE NSW Grafton and Coffs Harbour also pre-recorded live performances to add to the mix.

Today, TAFE NSW students will be performing at Napoleon Plaza, Wynyard Station from 10am-3pm. TAFE NSW Radio students will also be hosting a live-streamed radio show concurrently, featuring student musical acts and interviews with staff and performers.

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Music, Gabriella Dinallo, said the event really gives students from all disciplines a solid understanding of how to host and perform a live show.

“Make Music Day is a great opportunity for our students to refine their skills in music production and live performance and it’s great to see so many parts of TAFE NSW pulling together to get it off and running,” Ms Dinallo said.

“We’re proud to give our students the best hands-on training to prepare them for the industry. Each of the students in all disciplines has had an opportunity to try out their skills at a professional level, which will set them up nicely for when they graduate.”
