TAFE NSW students have been putting their new skills into practice with their hard work culminating in Australia's first entirely online pop-culture convention this weekend.

Nexus Con ticket holders will attend a range of virtual activities over two days including art prizes, cosplay competitions, workshops, comic books, game development, eSports, live-streamed interviews, panels, and Q&A with special guests.

TAFE NSW students from across a range of disciplines have been instrumental in planning the event with Certificate IV in Events students gaining practical skills and work experience with the online event logistics, Certificate III and IV in Screen and Media students are working on live-streaming the interviews and panel discussions, and Diploma of Visual Arts students assisting in designing concept art.

Nexus Con Event Coordinator from Blue Sky Community Services, Sam Standford, thanked the TAFE NSW students for their hard work and expertise as the Coffs Harbour-based face-to-face event has been transformed for an online audience due to COVID-19.

"I've been so impressed with the level of support Nexus Con has received from these passionate and talented TAFE NSW students.

"In times like this, it's great to see education and training providers, like TAFE NSW, teaching students by introducing them to the industry, while enabling them to gain experience which they can add to their resume and helping create a diverse and inclusive community event."

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Creative Ideation, Steve Macdonald, said the event has provided students with a wonderful opportunity to increase their skills.

"Experience such as this gives TAFE NSW students the chance to put the hands-on skills they have learnt in the classroom to practice in a real-world environment," Mr Macdonald said.

"This collaboration is a great example of the way TAFE NSW works with local industries to facilitate work experience opportunities and support skill requirements."

The virtual event has allowed greater involvement from students studying screen and media and has equipped TAFE NSW students with first-hand event planning experience and risk mitigation.
