Tenterfield Golf Club’s newest greenkeeper, Mitchell Austin, is encouraging local school students to follow his lead by studying a school-based apprenticeship as data reveals those who complete vocational education training (VET) qualifications, while at school, are more likely to gain full-time and permanent employment five years later.i

Mitch is on par for a bright future after successfully juggling his HSC with a school-based apprenticeship at Tenterfield Golf Club. When he graduated from Tenterfield High School, he was armed with his Higher School Certificate, a Certificate III in Sports Turf Management and his dream job.

Head Greenkeeper at Tenterfield Gold Club, Terry Butler said, Mitch was a great asset to the team and has played a vital role in the management of the golf course.

“Mitch’s confidence has grown enormously and he is using the hands-on skills he has learnt at TAFE NSW every day in his role – he is even teaching me a thing or two with his fresh ideas.

“When recruiting, we look favourably upon those that have studied at TAFE NSW, as they come to us ready to hit the ground running with practical skills and knowledge.”

Mitch said it was his love for golf and being outdoors that drew him to a career as a greenkeeper.

“I undertook work experience at the golf club in year 10 and I knew from there that greenkeeping was the career for me.

“TAFE NSW gave me the opportunity to further my skills in an area that I am so passionate about and it is great that they offer specialised courses like sports turf management.

“I was able to complete my HSC, study my qualification remotely and my TAFE NSW teachers travelled to assess my study and skills at my workplace in Tenterfield.”
