TAFE NSW graduate Apprentice of the Year finalist at John Deere Awards

TAFE NSW graduate Callum Campbell has been recognised as one of the top John Deere Technicians in Australia after completing his apprenticeship at Hutcheon and Pearce, Finley.

The 26-year-old was one of five finalists in the Parts and Service Apprentice category, celebrating the hard work and expertise John Deere technicians provide to customers across Australia and New Zealand.

It’s already been a bumper year for the Blighty local who also placed as a finalist in Apprentice of the Year at the 2021 Riverina NSW Training Awards, after completing a Certificate III in Automotive Sales at TAFE NSW Wagga Wagga.

Mr Campbell says he’s come a long way from the shy kid who was too nervous to pick up the phone in the first six months of his apprenticeship.

“When I started at Hutcheon and Pearce, I had the technical knowledge from working on a farm but no real experience in the business side of working in sales. I hadn’t turned on a computer in seven years, and I lacked confidence talking to customers,” said Mr Campbell.

“My training at TAFE NSW has completely changed me as a person. I’m much more confident, and I have the business skills to back up my practical knowledge.”

Hutcheon and Pearce Finley Branch Manager Brendan Prentice said the recognition of Callum’s hard work was no surprise.

“Backed by his farming experience and training, he always goes above and beyond to deliver a positive customer service and he has a bright future ahead at Hutcheon and Pearce,” said Mr Prentice.

“We heavily invest in the future of our apprentices through the Hutcheon and Pearce Top Gun program. In partnership with TAFE NSW, apprentices undertake customised training in John Deere products, and Callum’s success shows that our industry is in safe hands as we train the next generation.”

TAFE NSW Head Teacher Automotive, Wayne Sibrey, said industry recognition at this level was a testament to Callum’s commitment to excellence throughout his apprenticeship.

“Callum is proof that skills and training delivered at TAFE NSW are highly regarded by industry, giving our graduates a competitive edge when launching their careers.”
