With over 125 TAFE NSW apprentices over its 170 years, Halliday Engineering marks a special milestone for the leading Australian-owned and Sydney-based Engineering firm.

Founded in 1852, the firm takes great pride in its long history, which has been built on the industry know-how of six generations of the Halliday family. Managing Director, Luke Halliday, attributes the company’s ongoing success to its commitment to developing people.

“We have a strong focus and commitment to developing industry talent, which has helped Halliday helped cultivate and expand its operations significantly over the years.

“Halliday has always prioritised developing people. TAFE NSW has been an essential piece to helping us continue this focus. We have acquired and trained apprentices with TAFE NSW since the organisation's inception. The combination of theory and on-the-job training has produced some of the industry’s best-regarded engineers and tradespeople,” said Mr Halliday.

Halliday has over sixty five team members, supporting projects in the Maritime and Manufacturing industries. An important part of the team comprises of six apprentices and five undergraduate engineers.

Operations Director, Chris Bradley, has been with the business for over 17 years. Chris joined the business when he was just 17 after gaining a Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade from TAFE NSW Ultimo and Wollongong while completing a Fitting Machining Apprenticeship under Robert Halliday. Now Chris is responsible for the day-to-day operations of over 65 team members across a multitude of Maritime projects.

“I started at Halliday as an apprentice while studying at TAFE NSW. I moved up to Sydney from the South Coast at 17 years of age, not knowing what a great journey I was about to be taken on. Looking back at almost two decades at Halliday, I would never have thought that I would have had such great memories and experiences. All the exciting and challenging jobs that we have completed and the great colleagues I have worked with - I have built a career and a life here.” Chris Said.

Halliday has an extensive customer base and is heavily focused on supporting sustainment in the maritime Defence sector. Our Mechanical Fitters, Fabricators, Welders and Engineers proudly apply their skill sets on vessels, including HMAS Choules, HMAS Canberra, HMAS Adelaide, HMAS Supply, Mercator, MV Sycamore and others.

From humble beginnings, Halliday Engineering has grown to three workshops located at Sydney City Marine, Garden Island and Rozelle, all nearby to Sydney’s ports. The business now supports multiple sectors across Australia, including; Defence, Manufacturing, Maritime and Building Services.

Luke Halliday adds; “Our progress is a testament to our people and the institutions that have helped develop them. TAFE NSW’s programs, teachers and facilities have enabled us to keep doing what we love… building good people and supporting Australian Industry.”

Kirk Franks, Head Teacher for Mechanical Engineering and Shipwrights at TAFE NSW Ultimo said working with Halliday has provided a golden opportunity for passionate Engineering Trade students to get into their chosen profession with a company that places people at its core.
