In recognition of the challenges some students face in juggling their studies with other commitments such as family and work, TAFE NSW Casino yesterday hosted a community services day as an extension to its annual Orientation Week.
Community organisations such as Casino Neighbourhood Centre, Casino Soup Kitchen, Social Futures and The Buttery set up shop in the courtyard during lunch time to discuss programs available to students.
All enjoyed a sausage sizzle and participated in collaborative activities to strengthen bonds between students and Casino’s supportive community environment. TAFE NSW showcased its own internal support services alongside, including counselling, careers advice and disability services. In addition, donated items were collected for victims of the recent Tabulam fire.
TAFE Services Coordinator Trudy Mills said, “The vision behind this showcase was to make it clear to our students just how much support they have available at their fingertips at TAFE NSW Casino.”
“We want them to know they’re not alone as they strive forward with their studying journey - they have the weight of Australia’s largest education provider behind them and the support of their community.
“As is reflected across many rural areas of Australia, a good number of our students face hardship, including mental health issues, domestic violence and disability. Others simply need a small helping hand or a supportive conversation from time to time.
“What we’ve delivered today to our local student base might be the link between a student sticking with their studies or dropping out.
“TAFE NSW prides itself in giving our students every opportunity to achieve their career dreams. The local team at TAFE NSW Casino were delighted to receive a lot of positive feedback today and it assures us we’re on the right path.”
