Shoalhaven locals will have the opportunity to jumpstart a career working in the defence supply industry, thanks to a new employment program starting at TAFE NSW Nowra.
In partnership with TAFE NSW and the Shoalhaven Defence and Industry Group, Training Services NSW is inviting expressions of interest to complete a free pre-employment program that will equip students with job-ready skills to gain employment in the industry.
The ten-week program starts on 2 November. Students will complete a Certificate I in Engineering and up to four weeks of work placement with Defence accredited businesses.
The program is part of a local strategy to help address skill shortages and support Shoalhaven defence suppliers to meet increased demand after the Australian Government’s $200 billion investment to increase defense capability.
TAFE NSW Head Teacher Metal Fabrication and Welding Trades Nathan Bayliss said the program offers anyone looking to start a career or reskill the chance to explore a career pathway in a fast-growing industry.
"There is high demand in the Shoalhaven area for skilled workers in a range of areas, including advanced manufacturing, engineering, electronics, welding, and aircraft maintenance,” said Mr Bayliss.
"Students will attend training three days a week at TAFE NSW Nowra, learning real-world practical skills in engineering and fabrication. The program will give students a competitive edge, with the skills ready to start work in the industry."
A number of local businesses, including Air Affairs Australia, will provide students with work placement opportunities to gain hands-on industry experience.
Air Affairs Australia Production Manager Darren Bramley said it's been challenging to find workers with the right skill set.
"This program will help train students with the work-ready skills industry needs and connect our business with potential job candidates."
