Nuno Cintro is one of many TAFE NSW Kingscliff students gaining hands on learning experience and firsthand insight into conservation efforts in Queensland to save critically endangered species.

Portugese born Nuno has always had a love for conservation and the environment, having travelled the world working as a dive instructor in Mozambique, Brazil, and Spain. He is now well on his way to completing a Certificate III in Captive Animals as well as a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment at TAFE NSW Kingscliff.

“I came to Australia because of the amazing wildlife and I am so glad I did because the training in animal care is world-class. My experience with TAFE NSW has been amazing, from day one when I met my teachers who had a wealth of industry experience, I knew I was very lucky,” Nuno said.

As part of a training program offered by TAFE NSW Kingscliff, students studying a Certificate III in Captive Animals have the opportunity to gain practical skills and real world experience by completing a weekly practical lesson at Seaworld as part of their 12 month course.

Currently spending his days working with various species of endangered turtles in the fresh water section of Seaworld, Nuno commences work placement at Gold Coast’s Paradise Country next week to focus his efforts on a range of native Australian mammals including koalas, dingos, Tasmanian devils, and possums.

The qualified dive master has a passion for working with rescue animals and volunteers with for Wild Care Animal Rescue in Queensland and is aiming to get his qualification to volunteer for WIRES animal rescue in NSW.

It is Nuno’s aim to inspire other people to become passionate about animals and conservation.

“The program that TAFE NSW has with Seaworld allowed me to explore a range of jobs in the animal care industry. That’s how I discovered that I really enjoy caring for rescued animals and I hope to inspire others to make daily adjustments to their lifestyle towards conservation.”

According to research by Seek, demand for Zoo Keepers will increase by 12.7% over the next five years within New South Wales and Queensland. The job satisfaction rate has been recorded by real Zoo Keepers as 100%.
