TAFE NSW has moved to introduce a new Certificate IV in Wool Classing course at TAFE NSW Grenfell to meet the demand for skilled and registered wool classers in the region.

The course will enable students to learn hands-on, practical skills in wool clip preparation, pressing, documenting and describing to prepare Australian wool for worldwide exportation and quality clothing production.

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Agriculture John Cox said there’s never been a better time for locals who have been thinking about expanding their skills or entering the wool industry to study at TAFE NSW, as the course is now fee-free to those eligible under the NSW Government’s JobTrainer initiative.

 “Jobs for wool classers are plentiful locally and a good wool classer can earn a healthy wage,” Mr Cox said.

“Once students complete the course they will be eligible to be registered as a professional wool classer with the Australian Wool Exchange (AWEX).”

Wool Classer Registrar for AWEX, Fiona Raleigh welcomed the introduction of the course to Grenfell.

“Speaking with shearing contractors and harvesters in the region, there is a real demand for a course like this to attract skilled workers to the employment opportunities in the industry,” she said.

“It’s critical aspiring wool classers get a good grounding before they start so they’re efficient and effective in their jobs.

“TAFE NSW is supported by AWEX as the course delivers to industry standard and I encourage local people to enrol in the course if a career in wool classing is of interest to them.”

The Certificate IV in Wool Classing will commence at TAFE NSW Grenfell on 20 March 2021.
