TAFE NSW has intensified efforts to upskill the next generation of cyber security professionals amid a critical skills shortage in the industry and a dramatic spike in cyber-attacks in recent months. 

TAFE NSW Wollongbar has introduced a Certificate IV in Cyber Security this semester, set to upskill locals in order to cater to the recent rise in cyber crime.

Cyber security is one of the most lucrative and in demand jobs – and there’s tipped to be demand for at least 11,000 cyber security graduates over the next decade. 

The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) recently reported that cyber security incidents grew in severity between 2021 and 2022, which has led to a 14% increase in financial losses for business.

TAFE NSW Technology and Business Head Teacher Louise McCormack said TAFE NSW is working with a number of local companies to provide a pipeline of skilled workers to help keep individuals and businesses safe. 

“Now more than ever, skilled cyber security professionals have an increasingly important role in keeping ICT systems safe from criminals around the world,” Ms McCormack said.

“The TAFE NSW cyber security courses, particularly the Certificate IV in Cyber Security, provide graduates with the skills and knowledge to make a difference from their first day on the job. 

“Our training teaches students how to minimise cyber security incidents such as ransomware, phishing attacks and account compromise.

“Cyber security is a core skill and that’s why all our Information Communications Technology qualifications at TAFE NSW have units in cyber security built in.” 

Ms McCormack said the changes to the way we work brought by COVID-19 had created a “perfect storm” for scammers, who had switched their focus to people working remotely and used fear created by the pandemic to actively target vulnerable people and organisations.
