Eastwood local Alfred Zhang is encouraging others to enter the flourishing massage industry, having attributed his success to TAFE NSW training.

The industry is experiencing significant growth post-COVID, with demand for massage therapists projected to surge by 20 percent from 2021 to 2031, outpacing the average growth rate across all occupations.

After studying a degree in acupuncture and Chinese medicine from his home country of China, the 29-year-old completed a Diploma of Remedial Massage at TAFE NSW Meadowbank. He now works as a Remedial Massage Therapist at City Cave Rouse Hill and has set his sights on completing a Doctor of Physiotherapy at Macquarie University.

“I’ve always had an interest in health and wellbeing, particularly the manual therapy side of things. After completing my studies in China, I wanted to get my foot in the door of the Australian healthcare industry. I decided to enrol in the Diploma and haven’t looked back,” Mr Zhang said.

“The TAFE NSW course includes both theory and hands on components, and has given me high-level skills in anatomy, physiology, and remedial techniques. The teachers were incredibly supportive and approachable, which has been invaluable to my success.

“Working as a massage therapist is so rewarding and enjoyable. I get to interact with people from all walks of life, and hear their stories, but also use my skills to make them feel better, which makes me happy.

“Before I came to Australia, I wanted to do something in the medical field but am now hoping to do something more fast-tracked and build on my massage skills. I’m planning to study a Doctor of Physiotherapy at Macquarie University and become a physiotherapist, while working in the massage industry.”

TAFE NSW Massage Therapy Teacher, Karen Bailey said there is high demand for remedial massage graduates among employers throughout Sydney.

“We are thrilled to witness students such as Alfred forging rewarding careers in the health and wellness industry," Ms Bailey said.

"Throughout our diploma courses, students gain expertise in a range of massage techniques, including relaxation massage, remedial and sports massage, myofascial release techniques, and lymphatic drainage. This places them in high demand from employers, leading to a variety of career opportunities in the industry.”
