An internationally renowned photographer, whose work has been published in magazines across Europe, the US and the Middle East, has returned home to upskill at TAFE NSW Campbelltown.

Campbelltown local, Dana Russo, specialises in Arabian horse photography and has photographed high-profile international clients and local talent including Australian model and actress, Sheridyn Fisher and Sydney base Designer Vee Love Couture ​​​

Dana returned to TAFE NSW Campbelltown to complete her Diploma of Graphic Design to expand her skills in typography and layout for print, as well as upskill in current design trends in the industry.

The 44-year-old said growing up around horses and participating in local equestrian events is what inspired her love of horse photography.

“I was originally working in the styling and makeup industry but when I picked up the camera 20 years ago at an equestrian event, I never imagined the international career photography would lead me to.

“My TAFE NSW Campbelltown teachers have been very supportive and because there are flexible study options, I am still able to work while I study, which has been the biggest blessing,” Dana said.

Among the prestigious magazines Dana’s photographs have featured in is Arabian Horse Italy, Tutto Arabi Italy and Open Lense Magazine.

“I’ve been flying internationally for the last 15 years shooting at secluded locations across the Middle East, Europe and the US, which has allowed me to develop my photography skills.

“Even with all these experiences, I was still lacking formal qualifications and theoretical knowledge, which is why I enrolled at TAFE NSW and it’s been one of the best decisions for my career progression,” Dana said.

​​​​TAFE NSW head teacher in creative design, Lydia Kullik, said it was a great time for Dana to upskill in graphic and web design with the number of people employed in the industry nationally growing strongly over the last five years to 55,700 in 2019.1

“Dana is an exceptional student who has already forged a remarkable career in the industry and her decision to upskill at TAFE NSW will only open up more doors for her,” Ms Kullik said. 

“TAFE NSW creative design and art courses are very well regarded in the industry because of the hands-on skills and experience students get, including ones delivered here in Campbelltown.”
