A young chef has been recognised for his exceptional achievements and strong work ethic at the TAFE NSW Excellence Awards.
Twenty one year old Certificate III Commercial Cookery student, Scott Wright, took home the Apprentice of the Year award at the ceremony in June, recognising his commitment to his studies and resilience in the face of adversity.
The TAFE NSW Excellence Awards acknowledge students who have demonstrated determination, resilience, and leadership – identifying those who achieve outstanding academic results, who provide significant contribution to their professions, and who exhibit exceptional personal qualities.
Scott Wright began his career washing dishes in a local restaurant in his hometown of Yamba, and now works as an apprentice chef at the Blaxland Inn, in Pokolbin. He was selected as a finalist in the Fonterra Proud to be a Chef program, and was also a finalist for the Clarence Valley Citizen's of the Year Young Person of the Year award.
Scott says he has always known he wanted to work in hospitality, but his studies through TAFE NSW have helped him find his path.
“I have always known I wanted to work in restaurants, I enjoy the atmosphere and helping people celebrate special occasions, especially through food,” he said.
“Making the decision to take on an apprenticeship and study at TAFE NSW has been a huge stepping stone for me, not just in my career, but also in learning more about myself and what I am capable of. My teacher, Bernadette, has had a lot to do with that. She has supported me and encouraged me to push myself, to realise my potential.”
“Learning my trade has opened doors for me, as a chef I can travel the world, and learn new skills from experts in many culinary styles and techniques. It’s an incredible industry to be involved in and I look forward to seeing where my qualifications take me.”
TAFE NSW Commercial Cookery Teacher Bernadette Ryan says Scott has shown success not only in academic excellence, but also through his personal and community endeavours.
“Scott is proof that if you give it your absolute best and push through difficult times, you can achieve anything,” she said.
“Scott's journey is not just about becoming a skilled chef, but also about overcoming challenges with a positive attitude, contributing to his community, and aspiring to reach new heights in his chosen profession. He never takes days off, he is incredibly committed.
“His story is an inspiration to all, and he is truly deserving of this recognition. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch Scott grow, in both his skills and also his confidence. I cannot wait to see what he achieves.”
