TAFE NSW graduates are emerging from their studies with the up-to-date skills necessary for a rewarding career in the media and communications industry.

According to the Federal Government’s Job Outlook, the number of Professional Relations workers is expected to grow strongly with an additional 2,000 jobs expected to be created over the next three years[1].

TAFE NSW graduate Craig Hodges already had experience in the media industry working both in radio and television, but was looking to refresh his resume with up to date technical skills to further his career.

“I wanted to learn about new software and content creation techniques to update my skills in line with changes in the industry,” Mr Hodges said.

Mr Hodges enrolled in the Certificate IV in Screen and Media (Broadcasting) at TAFE NSW Ultimo and quickly began gaining the skills he sought.

“What really impressed me was that the instructors had up to date experience from mainstream media and great knowledge of what the industry was looking for in future employees and talent.

“My teachers were all still working in the industry and were able to share their first-hand experiences with the cohort which provided a wonderful context to our learning.”

Teacher of Screen and Media at TAFE NSW Ultimo, Nick Bennett said the Certificate IV of Screen and Media (Broadcasting) teaches cutting edge content creation and technical skills that any communications professional would need for the jobs of the future.

“Through the course, students gain skills in a range of content creation software, plus sought-after practical skills in broadcast and audio production,” Mr Bennett said. 

“Students get the opportunity to develop a solid portfolio of their work, and consider the type of work they might want to make post-studies.”

Mr Hodges swiftly secured a position as a Communications Manager for the First Nations Portfolio at the Australian National University following his studies and has relocated to Canberra for the role.

“I found TAFE NSW to be well organised, and I think the instructors did a marvellous job of delivering the course content and meeting the needs of individual students despite COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. I enjoyed the very tailored and personalised approach to learning.
