A TAFE NSW graduate is fulfilling a need for more females in the IT sector, having secured a job as a Network Administrator after moving to Australia five years ago to build a new life. 

According to Job Outlook, only 10% of network administrators in Australia are female.

Deivanai Ramanathan, 27, studied a Bachelor of Computer Science and Engineering in her home country of India, and has since completed a Certificate IV and Diploma of Information Technology Networking at TAFE NSW Meadowbank. 

“I enrolled in the networking course at TAFE NSW as I was looking to gain practical skills to bolster the theoretical knowledge I gained during my engineering degree in India, and land a rewarding job here in Australia,” Deivanai said.  

“When I first started in my current role, I was the only woman in the team. It’s a challenging role, but I’ve always been passionate about networking and I’d strongly encourage other women to pursue a career in the field.” 

TAFE NSW teacher, Adnan Syed, said the nationally accredited Diploma of Information Technology Networking equips students with the skills they need to join the booming IT sector. 

“The Diploma in IT Networking combines theory and practical course work to equip students with in-demand skills such as designing, building, configuring and testing a Windows server,” Adnan said. 

“There is a huge demand in the corporate sector for server virtualisation and managing complex ICT networks, given the demand to reduce the high cost of server maintenance for cloud computing. 

“Students like Deivanai who complete the course can go on to work within a variety of organisations to oversee the security of ICT systems, either as an IT technician, network administrator or systems engineer.”
