A Cowra TAFE NSW student has been given a rare opportunity to take up a second traineeship with Cowra Council and has also inspired his Council team mates to pursue further training in their chosen profession.

Jonathon Day became a trainee storeperson with the Council last year and completed his Certificate II in Warehouse Operations during the 12-month program.

‘Jono’ impressed his employer so much with his work ethic and skills he was offered a second traineeship this year so he could complete his Certificate III in Warehouse Operations.

His supervisor Craig Negus and co-worker Linda Jonkers saw the practical skills and industry knowledge Jonathon was gaining through his course and decided they would complement their years of practical experience by also enrolling in a Certificate III in Warehouse Operations to update their knowledge about emerging technology and trends in their field.

“Jono has grown from a shy and nervous starter into a confident young man who can now run the store, even in the mornings when we can have up to 80 staff attending our works depot to pick up the machinery and equipment they require for their day’s work,” Mr Negus said.

“Traineeships are usually a 12-month program. However, offering a second traineeship was a win-win for both Jono and Council. He can stay in local employment and gain further qualifications while Council benefits from its investment in a local young person.”

In addition to completing his Certificate II training, Jonathon has also earned qualifications in forklift driving and chemical handling.

Jonathon said his experience with the Council has been a welcome opportunity which has enhanced his skills despite the difficulties caused by COVID throughout his initial traineeship.

“I really enjoy the opportunity to work in a practical field, and I am very thankful for this second traineeship which means I can achieve my Certificate III,” he said.

Cowra Mayor Bill West said the traineeship showed how Council supports local employment and benefits from its staff increasing their expertise and continually updating knowledge of industry trends.

“Council recognises the importance of trade and other post-school training options in the region in supporting our staff in their professional development and career paths.  We continue to actively seek partnerships with organisations like TAFE NSW to develop better economic and social outcomes across the Shire,” Cr West said.
