TAFE NSW students across northern NSW are gaining invaluable on-the-job experience at animal care facilities including Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Sea World, Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary, Paradise Country, and Bryon Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Upon graduation learners are prepared to walk into careers as zookeepers, marine animal attendants, conservation and wildlife presenters and animal technical officers.

During the 12-month Certificate III in Wildlife and Exhibited Animal Care course, students immerse themselves in the world of native and exotic animals, caring for animals in these exhibited facilities.

26-year-old TAFE NSW Kingscliff graduate, Lauren Smithers, said she gained immense confidence to work with animals while completing the course.

“During my placement with Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, I gained a wide-array of on-the-job experience – ranging from providing enrichment for animals to maintaining animal habitats - and monitoring animal health and wellbeing. One day I might be desludging a dingo enclosure and the next, I could be learning to safely handle reptiles,” said Ms Smithers.

Post-graduation, Ms Smithers was offered a full-time position as an Animal Trainer and Presenter at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. The job allows her to channel her passion for conservation to educate others about to make a difference to co-exist with animals.

“Another aspect of the training included learning about key conservation projects Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is undertaking for the Eastern Bristlebird, Kroombit Tinkerfrog, among other projects. With this knowledge, I’m able to positively promote and educate people about conservation and wildlife, which I love doing,” Ms Smithers said.

TAFE NSW head teacher Amber Newman said work placement at these facilities supplements campus-based study, and provides students with hands-on experience and sought-after employer connections.
 

“The practical experience we provide students is equips students with the first-hand confidence and skills in their important careers caring for animals.”
