    Learn to install, maintain and repair communications cables that form the backbone of high-speed data networks such as the NBN. Develop your knowledge and confidence working with a range of cables such as broadband, fibre optic and coaxial.

    OutcomesWhat you'll gain

    Learning outcomes

    Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:

    • Install, repair, test and terminate communications cabling for private houses, workplaces and outdoor environments

    • Maintain and modify cable support and infrastructure for earthing and termination

    • Evaluate analogue and digital signals and measure a range of voltages including low and extra low

    • Label earthing systems and test and terminate cables and earth wires

    • Connect and test communications devices

    • Identify risks and hazards on worksites and assess the need for minor traffic management in the field

    • A nationally accredited Statement of Attainment

    • A pathway to further study in telecommunications

    • Specialist skills to install, test, fix and close a range of communications cables

    • Techniques to interpret drawings detailing cable layouts

    • A sound understanding of WHS and the ability to contribute to committees and support representatives

    Entry recommendations

    To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

    • An interest in IT, electronics or telecommunications

    • Problem solving skills, critical thinking, good communication and customer service

    • The ability to work in a range of indoor and outdoor environments

    • The confidence to work independently and made decisions in a results-focused industry

    • Experience working with tools and a background in cabling is helpful (but not essential)

    • Knowledge of electrical theory and WHS would be beneficial

    Licensing

    Upon graduating from the course and completing 360 hours of workplace experience, students can apply for cabling registration. The Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA) requires all technicians installing telecommunications cables and networks to be registered. https://www.acma.gov.au/types-cabling-registration
