Sew your own story with this introductory course in fashion and garment creation. Confidently use a sewing machine to align and sew pattern pieces. Learn the principles and elements of fashion design so you can create your own designer garments.
Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:
Identify a fabric or textile from its visual and physical properties
Understand the processes used to convert materials into products in the textiles, clothing and footwear industry
Apply principles and elements of fashion design to create your own designer garments
Align and sew pattern pieces according to pattern requirements and use an industrial sewing machine confidently
Make pattern blocks from scratch and modify blocks to construct commercial garments
Create mood boards to visually present design, colour and textile inspirations
Gain practical experience and develop specialist skills that give you an advantage in the job market.
A nationally accredited Certificate II qualification
The skills and ability to sew your own designer garments using basic stitching and straight seams
Experience using Adobe Creative Suite
Exposure to industry professionals and access to a network of peers
A strong pathway to complete further study in the textiles, clothing and footwear industry

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:
An interest in fashion and garment creation
A reasonable degree of physical fitness to complete machining tasks
A moderate level of computer literacy to use design programs
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at a Year 10 high school level

Our graduates go onto roles like: trainee seamstress, trainee pattern maker, or junior design assistant with the Certificate III in Apparel, Fashion and Textiles. and Entry-level pattern maker, designer, product developer or research and development consultant with Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising (Design and Product Development).

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate II in Apparel, Fashion and Textiles qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 12 units of competency, including 6 core and 6 speciality units.
Please note, not all specialty units are offered at every TAFE NSW location. It is highly recommended that you check with your preferred campus for information about the specialty units offered at that location.
