    Learning outcomes

    Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:

    • Remove old finishes and prepare furniture to receive finishes

    • Select appropriate materials for finishing furniture

    • Apply lacquer, polyurethane, oil and water-based finishes

    • Perform traditional French polishing and explore heritage skills

    • Repair or restore timber and composite components in furniture

    • Apply decorative finishes and colour matching to samples

    • A nationally accredited qualification at certificate III level

    • The skills to colour match to different types of wood including walnut, cedar and teak

    • The ability to perform marbling, verdigrising, imitation-wood graining and touch-up repair work

    • Confidence completing finishing work on dining furniture, shop fittings, installations and kitchens

    To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

    • Relevant employment or access to an appropriate simulated workplace environment

    • Some experience handling tools and equipment

    • A reasonable level of fitness to manage the physical demands of the role

    • Literacy and numeracy skills at year 10 high school level

    Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Furniture Finishing qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 22 units of competency, including 8 core and 14 speciality units.
