Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:
Apply plain, decorative and protective plaster and cement to interior and exterior structures
Use specialist tools for solid plastering
Cut and fit plaster cornices
Apply plaster, lime setting and texture finishes
Conduct restoration of detailed heritage work
Gain practical experience and develop specialist skills that give you an advantage in the job market.
A sound understanding of how to apply render and other solid plastering materials to walls and ceilings of various shapes and sizes
The skills to create and install detailed mouldings in render and plaster
Eligibility to apply for a tradesperson certificate or registration with NSW Fair Trading
A sound understanding of workplace safety
This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol
To take this course as an apprenticeship you need to be employed as an apprentice in the industry as evidenced by a letter of support from your employer and
Submit your Training Plan Proposal (TPP) with your application
During your study you’ll need to provide your teacher with the following evidence:
A general construction induction card (commonly known as a white card) – you will need this before you can enter a construction site
To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:
The ability to work independently and as part of a team
A strong work ethic
A good level of fitness to manage the physical demands of the job, including lifting bags of cement, shovelling sand, manoeuvring wheelbarrows, and working at heights on scaffolding and trestles
Interest in handling power tools
Literacy and numeracy skills to accurately interpret safety data sheets and measure quantities of materials

This is a licensed occupation. NSW Fair Trading is the licensing and regulatory authority for trades and contractor authorities in NSW. When you successfully complete the Certificate III in Solid Plastering you can apply for licensing with NSW Fair Trading. Visit NSW Fair Trading for more information. A white card (or general construction induction card) is required for workers who want to carry out construction work in NSW. This is specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work (ASCC 2007). Visit SafeWork NSW for more information on applying for your white card.

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Solid Plastering qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 20 units of competency, including 15 core and 5 speciality units.
Please note, not all specialty units are offered at every TAFE NSW location. It is highly recommended that you check with your preferred campus for information about the specialty units offered at that location.
