    Learn how to facilitate the inclusion of diverse children in an early childhood education and care setting. Gain practical strategies to implement inclusive teaching methods and promote effective collaboration with families and professionals, such as therapists. This short course will build your capability to better support, empower and educate children with diverse backgrounds and abilities.

    Learning outcomes

    Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:

    • Understand and include the needs of diverse children in the context of early childhood education and care, with a particular focus on children who experience disability

    • Collaborate and develop effective partnerships with families of children as well as with professionals from other disciplines such as therapists

    • Implement appropriate teaching strategies to support inclusive practices

    • Establish and strengthen inclusive thinking and teaching practices

    • Determine teaching styles and strategies for engaging with children with diverse needs

    • A microcredential in Inclusive Practice and Principles in Early Childhood

    • The ablity to exhibit and critique historical and contemporary inclusive education research and practices

    • The experience to justify the importance of family perspectives and community networks in early childhood inclusive education

    • The confidence to critically engage in, and apply, inclusive pedagogy and strategies for including children with diverse needs

    • The knowledge to engage in deep critical thinking and reflective practice about concepts, theories and practices surrounding inclusive education

    Entry requirements

    This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol

    You must demonstrate that you have achieved one of the following:

      • A NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or its equivalent or
      • A Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation or its equivalent or
      • A completed certificate IV or higher vocational qualification

    You must also:

      • Attend a pre-admission interview where you may be asked to complete a short literacy and numeracy task - this helps us to understand how we can support your study success and provide you with any necessary support

    Note:

      • Your certificates, transcripts and other entry requirement evidence must be certified through a Justice of the Peace or other authorising officer

    Entry recommendations

    To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

    • An interest in working with children and families with diverse backgrounds, abilities and needs

    • A current First Aid Certificate including CPR, anaphylaxis and asthma awareness training to meet WorkCover requirements

    • The Child Protection Awareness Training (induction) Unit of Competence CHCPRT001 – Identify and respond to children and young people at risk of harm

    • The time to attend a 5 1/2 hour orientation before class commences

    • Decision-making skills and the ability to respond and act quickly in situations

    • The ability to improve quality outcomes for children, families, colleagues and services

    You do not require an ATAR score for entry into this course.

    If you are unable to meet the entry requirements, you may be eligible for special admission.

    Our graduates go onto roles like: early childhood (pre-primary school) teacher, early childhood education and care service director, preschool teacher, early childhood teacher, long daycare teacher, childcare centre director, family support specialist, policy advisor.

    Licensing

    You will need to have a current Working With Children Check and all necessary vaccinations that your workplace may require to work in the early childhood education sector.
