    Work placement

A young hospitality student stands behind a bar, pouring a drink for a customer. She is smiling happily straight at the camera.

At TAFE NSW, many courses require compulsory work placement.

Work placement is where students must complete a minimum number of supervised hours. This can be done in a real or simulated workplace environment at a TAFE NSW campus.

Participating in work placement allows you to learn, develop and apply the skills from your course. Work placements need to be completed in order to graduate.

Details about work placement requirements can be found on the specific course information page.

    Finding work placement

Depending on your course and study mode, you may need to arrange your own work placement, or TAFE NSW may arrange it for you.

If you arrange your own, it must be approved by TAFE NSW to ensure it is suitable and meets all regulatory requirements, including work health and safety (WHS).

If you have additional needs (such as a disability or medical condition), these must be discussed with your teacher. This will help us plan for any necessary adjustments that you require.

For more information on work placements, check the relevant course information page.

    Work placement requirements

Some courses have additional work placement and prerequisite requirements that you will need to meet before starting.

    For example:

    • Health and aged care courses will require up-to-date vaccinations and a National Police Check.

    • Child care and community courses require a National Police Check and a valid Working With Children Check (WWCC).

    • Some trade courses may require a General Construction Induction Training (GCIT) card (white card) and your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Ask your teacher about specific details before you begin.

You can find more information on your specific course page.

    Student responsibilities

When undertaking work placement it’s important to manage your personal and work commitments.

To successfully complete the placement you must:

    • attend all required work placement hours which may include early mornings, late nights, weekends or public holidays
    • arrange your own travel to and from the placement
    • respect the dress code and maintain personal grooming standards
    • maintain appropriate behaviour
    • follow the provider's policies and instructions.

It is important to complete all the tasks required in your work placement enthusiastically and be willing to learn. Your performance will be assessed by the provider, and feedback will be provided to your teacher.

    Termination policy

TAFE NSW, or the placement provider, can cancel or terminate your placement at anytime.

    This may be due to:

    • inappropriate conduct
    • breach of discipline
    • being a risk to yourself or others.

If this happens, it will be handled according to TAFE NSW policies.

For courses where successful completion of work placement is a requirement, termination of your placement could mean that you will not be able to complete your course.
