Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:
Correctly identify a fabric or textile from its visual and physical properties
Use a sewing machine to align and sew pattern pieces according to the fabric and product type
Control a sewing machine's speed and use an industrial machine confidently
Apply principles and elements of fashion design to create your own designer garments
Engage in sustainable practices when producing textiles, clothing and footwear
Create mood boards and fashion illustrations to visually present design, colour and textile ideas
Gain practical experience and develop specialist skills that give you an advantage in the job market.
A nationally accredited Certificate III qualification
The skills and ability to create a designer garment from start to finish, using basic and intermediate sewing and patternmaking techniques

A reasonable degree of physical fitness to complete machining tasks
A moderate level of computer literacy to use design programs
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at a Year 10 high school level

The Certificate III in Apparel, Fashion and Textiles does not have any related courses.
At TAFE NSW, we recognise your previous study and work experience. You can apply for recognition of prior learning or a credit transfer with any of our courses. If you're successful you'll get your qualification faster.
Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Apparel, Fashion and Textiles qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 18 units of competency, including 6 core and 12 speciality units.
Please note, not all specialty units are offered at every TAFE NSW location. It is highly recommended that you check with your preferred campus for information about the specialty units offered at that location.
