1. Get a head start

You already have skills and experience, so why start from scratch? Be recognised for what you already know so you can better enhance and focus your skills.

Credit Transfer means any studies you have already completed might count as credit towards your new qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) recognises skills, knowledge or experience you have gained outside of the education system, including the skills you have picked up at work. Recognition means you can save time and money. It also ensures you only be hone new skills, rather than waste time on things you already know.

Meg Yates knows the advantages of ‘scaffolding’ qualifications. She began a Certificate II in Tourism at TAFE NSW as part of her HSC study. Then, Meg enrolled at TAFE Digital for an online Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management. But wait, there’s more! Meg was also studying for a commerce degree full-time and working part-time. And on top of that, there was a study tour to Germany.

By carefully choosing courses and building on her skills, Meg was able to achieve an extraordinary amount.

“Applying the practical knowledge that I have learned whilst studying at TAFE NSW – to assignments at university and my employment – have been beneficial,” says Meg.

She says her TAFE NSW studies have allowed her to think more critically and more logically. Meanwhile, the software skills, and business practices and strategies she learned were able to be applied in the travel industry. Now Meg is planning on building upon all of that with a Masters degree to research global tourism trends.

2. If you're online, stay on course

Many people studying for career advancement choose online study because it’s convenient. But no-one said is was an easy ride. Finding the time and maintaining motivation has its challenges.

3. Be social and share your success

When you’re trying to further your career, there’s no point in keeping quiet about it. You want people to know you’re doing good work.

When you’ve aced a project, won a new account, finished a build, or created a memorable event - make sure you let everyone know about it on your platforms. Your successes won’t always be massive, but if you create a pattern of positive energy, it reflects well.

Start small and join groups that are relevant to your industry, following industry leaders on social media. Suddenly, you’ll have a much larger exposure to what’s going on in the wider world within your business. You’ll get to see what other people and companies are doing within your industry, while also learning when professional events, forums and meet-ups are scheduled.

4. Take short cuts

Short courses are a perfect way to stay fresh within your business, and continued study always looks impressive on a CV.
