Training the trainers

You will learn how to plan, organise and deliver training, plan and implement assessment activities, and how to design training programs to meet client needs

It happens more than you might think. TAFE students who are so inspired by their teachers and by their whole vocational learning experience that they decide to become TAFE teachers themselves.

Maybe this desire to "pay it forward" is an inevitable by-product of having teachers who are experts in their fields and so passionate about their subjects. After all, passion, like laughter and yawning, can be highly contagious.

But passion alone won't get an aspiring TAFE teacher across the line. Part of the reason TAFE teachers are generally such great teachers of vocational education is because it's mandatory that they all complete a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment as part of their formal training, as well as 5 years industry experience. This is the qualification needed to meet the requirements of the VET Quality Framework, as set out by the Australian Skills Quality Authority. The VET Quality Framework is aimed at achieving greater national consistency in the way Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) such as TAFE NSW are registered and monitored and how standards in the vocational education and training sector are enforced.

Looking to become a TAFE NSW teacher?

For anyone who's thinking of becoming a TAFE teacher themselves, the good news is that the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is now available via flexible delivery through TAFE NSW Online. This means you can study at the times that are most convenient. You will learn how to plan, organise and deliver training, plan and implement assessment activities, and how to design training programs to meet client needs. In doing so, you'll create a rich portfolio for future employment. If you have previously completed the Cert IV you may need to update your qualification with Address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills.

The Certificate IV qualification is currently enrolling, so now's the time to take that necessary step towards becoming a teacher of vocational education.
