TAFE NSW is empowering young people to start their careers in the booming real estate industry with the delivery of a Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice, providing a pipeline of skilled workers to meet the property sector’s workforce growth of 10% over the next 2 years. 

Despite rapid interest rate hikes, property prices continue to boom with a 72% increase in national dwelling values in the decade to 2022, and people are seizing this opportunity to enter the industry at an exciting time.

TAFE NSW’ Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice offers people seeking a future in real estate the opportunity to build their knowledge and skills in what TAFE NSW teacher Mark Skelton describes as a hugely rewarding career.

“Property prices are booming, and the population is growing, and that brings with it exciting opportunities in the industry,” Mr Skelton said.

“It’s an ideal time to explore a career in property. It’s a very diverse industry and can be both financially and professionally rewarding.

“As with many industries, there was concern for the real estate industry when Covid-19 hit but it has shown not only resilience but enormous growth in capital cities and in many regional areas.

“TAFE NSW students are equipped with the practical skills and experience that they need to pursue employment opportunities in the industry in a time where skilled agents are in demand,” he said.

Real Estate is in the blood of TAFE NSW Newcastle graduate Rachael Palmer, whose parents founded Adamstown’s Palmer Reality in 2013 after years in the industry. Now working as a Sales Agent, Rachael, 21, said TAFE NSW fast tracked her career, helping her to build practical skills and industry-specific knowledge.

“I started at Palmer Realty in 2021 but had helped as much as I could prior to that as someone without a certificate or license. I enjoy all aspects of working in real estate, especially being part of the delight of satisfied vendors and excited new homeowners. I knew I wanted to make this my career, so I enrolled at TAFE NSW to continue build my skills.

“In a changing market, I am thoroughly familiar with the ins and outs of our local communities, and the shifting trends of the local real estate market, but I learned so much more at TAFE NSW.

“Compliance is a must in real estate, and the Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice covers legislation in depth, as well as marketing, auctioneering, and customer service,” Rachael said.

Rachael’s hard work was rewarded with the Walkom Real Estate Encouragement Award in 2023.

“Winning the Walkom Real Estate Award was an amazing surprise and quite the honour, my parents and I were completely overjoyed. I am extremely grateful to Scott Walkom and TAFE NSW for providing the opportunity,” she said.
