TAFE NSW has responded to strong interest in the arts among the Southern Highlands community by introducing a new Certificate III in Design Fundamentals course at TAFE NSW Moss Vale from next month. 

The course was introduced after a recent taster event at the campus for prospective learners, which resulted in the enrolment of 12 new students.  

It will offer graduates immediate entry to a Diploma in Visual Arts, with the potential to progress to a bachelor’s degree course with TAFE NSW. 

Students will be prepared to enter the arts workforce at a time when the Jobs and Skills Australia is forecasting employment in arts and recreation services to grow by 10% by November 2026. 

The course can lead students to further arts education or careers in the visual arts, galleries and museums as well as specialised roles in fields such as graphic arts, interior design, jewellery-making and creative screen media opportunities.  

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Art and Digital Media South, Mary-Jane Griggs, said the course was ideal for school leavers taking early steps on their creative journeys, but anyone looking to learn the creative fundamentals to use in their existing career or to consider a career change would also benefit. 

“It’s a great starting point because it offers all the foundation skills in design which can flow through to training in digital software, studio practice, colour and photography and more,” she said. 

“The Southern Highlands has a rich and varied creative scene and we’re excited to be offering this course, following a high level of interest from local arts enthusiasts.” 

New student Franklyn Turnnidge, who enrolled immediately after attending the taster event, said she was excited by the opportunity to revisit her long-held passion for art. 

“I used to paint, and I exhibited and sold some of my works but took a long break and now I’m looking forward to reinventing my skills because the enjoyment you get from art is indescribable,” she said. 

“I think this course is a great way to open up opportunities and rebuild my confidence and at the same time, enjoy the social aspect of learning with like-minded artists.” 

Ms Turnnidge, who will soon move to the Southern Highlands from the South Coast to further her arts interest, hopes to develop a new career in the growing field of arts therapy so she can use her skills to help other people recover their health and wellbeing. 

The course will be offered at TAFE NSW Moss Vale from July 18.
