TAFE NSW offers a free and confidential* service for career planning, objectives and exploration for your high school students. The Counselling and Career Development Service is designed to help your students identify their chosen study pathway and then succeed during their studies. While students are studying at TAFE NSW, our Counsellors understand that personal matters can sometimes interfere with the ability to learn. They make it their business to listen to students’ needs and work with them (one-on-one) to come up with strategies to help them succeed in their chosen career choices.

As your first point of contact, email schools@tafensw.edu.au to discuss the opportunity of a TAFE NSW representative attending your high school.

We partner with employers to provide mentorships, internships, work placements, and real-world learning. Whatever your course, you will develop current, practical skills through both real and simulated work environments.

Some school subjects can give credit towards TAFE NSW qualification. This means students may be able to decrease the number of units and study time required to complete their course.

School subjects that may be recognised include:

• TVET studies (i.e. nationally recognised units from Training Packages or Accredited Courses)
• HSC subjects developed by the NSW Education Standards Authority. These subjects include a range of industry areas and you will need to show that you have successfully completed them in the last five years. You will also need to discuss with TAFE NSW staff what credit they may grant towards your desired course.

Students may also be able to use their previous study and other evidence of their knowledge, skills and experience to gain Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for credit towards their course. With RPL students formal and informal learning are individually assessed to see whether they meet competency standards.

There have been quite extensive changes to the previous processes associated with approving students under the age of 17 into TAFE NSW.

As per the 2009 amendment to the Education Act 1990, young people must remain at school until they complete Year 10 or reach 17 years of age – whichever occurs first.

By completing Year 10, students will allow themselves greater opportunity for further education, additional training and work experience later in life.

In exceptional circumstances, young people may seek approval to complete the equivalent of Year 10 of secondary education at TAFE NSW. To seek approval, you must contact your school principal to complete the application form.
