A Pyrmont local and TAFE NSW graduate has made the switch from marketing to aged care, after finding his calling for the industry later in life. 

Due to an ageing population, it is estimated Australia’s aged care workforce will need to double or triple by 2050 to provide care for the growing number of aged care residents.

Originally from Korea, 33-year-old Ben Park was spurred on to change careers after COVID-19 impacted his career in the marketing industry. 

Inspired by his experience caring for his grandmother in his home country, he enrolled in the Certificate III in Individual Support at TAFE NSW Ultimo, and now works as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) at St Mary's Villa in Concord.

“When my job in marketing was affected by the pandemic, I saw an opportunity to pursue a career in a field I have always been passionate about,” Mr Park said. 

“I enrolled in the Certificate III in Individual Support at TAFE NSW and never looked back. The teachers gave me the support and skills I needed to succeed. 

“In my culture, caring for your elders is so important. Since the age of 10, I’ve helped look after my family, so I understand the importance of providing personalised care for people later in life. Working as an AIN is so rewarding, and I look forward to studying a  Diploma of Nursing at TAFE NSW to progress my career further.”

General Manager at St Mary’s Villa Fiona Kendall said Ben’s training at TAFE NSW prepared him   to deliver excellent care for their residents.

“We saw how caring and capable he was immediately. We offered Ben a role before he had completed his placement. Residents love Ben, the team are impressed, and we are very lucky to have him.”

Head Teacher at TAFE NSW Amanda Collins said the Certificate III in Individual Support provides a pathway to a rewarding career in the aged care sector, which is crying out for skilled workers.

“Ben is a prime example of the opportunities TAFE NSW provides those looking to gain job-ready skills and join a high-growth industry,” Ms Collins said.  

“Through theory and practical course work, students gain crucial skills such as the principles of person-centered care, how to work with a diverse range of clients, and how to empower clients to reach their independence goals.”
