TAFE Western Creative Industries has partnered with the Arts in Health program to brighten the walls of Dubbo Hospital.

Students visited the hospital to set up an exhibition to bring a little colour to the walls of the new clinical services building. The new works went up last month for the benefit of hospital patients, carers and staff.

Research shows that paintings and other works of art help patients and families in the healing process. Studies show that there a direct link between the content of images and the brain's reaction to pain, stress, and anxiety. Head teacher of TAFE Western Creative Industries Vicki Vance told the Daily Liberal that the partnership gives students firsthand knowledge of how art can be used to have a positive effect on the patients at Dubbo Hospital. "Students also gained experience in curatorial practice, installation and the de-installation of art exhibitions through this unique exposure opportunity," she said.

The exhibition space at Dubbo Hospital is part of TAFE Westerns commitment to encourage strong community engagement. President of Base Art Inc., Melanie Moeller said "We are incredibly proud and pleased to see a dedicated space in Dubbo Hospital for art produced by local TAFE Western Creative Industries students".

Dubbo Hospital General Manager, Debbie Bickerton told the Daily Liberal that the Arts in Health program aims to improve the hospital environment and experience for patients.

"Art in our new Clinical Service Building is a real highlight for us because the art brightens the hospital environment, giving patients much needed distraction when ill," Ms Bickerton said.

"The inclusion of the TAFE Western artwork is a great way to involve community in their local hospital."
