Here are some tips on how to tap into that vast pool of genius and innovation that you know is lurking away just below the surface of your subconscious
We at TAFE NSW love creativity and innovation. But sometimes these things can seem elusive. It's often the case that when you need them the most, like when working on an assignment or project, the ideas seem to go awol. Here are some tips on how to tap into that vast pool of genius and innovation that you know is lurking away just below the surface of your subconscious.
Any kind of physical activity is great for unleashing your inner creative genius, but sometimes the simplest is the most effective. Research has shown that the simple act of walking can boost creativity. This is something we realise intuitively. It's why we often pace back and forth when trying to hatch an idea or when excited or stimulated by a conversation.
One brain is a good start, but a bunch of brains is even better. Especially when they're all firing at once and there's someone furiously scribbling down the ideas on a whiteboard. The most important thing to remember with brainstorming sessions is that all ideas are welcome, no matter how silly they may seem at the time. As soon as people feel they need to censor their ideas for fear of looking silly, it stops being a true brainstorming session. It's like putting the handbrake on people's creativity.
Going to talks or lectures, especially with like-minded people, can be a great way to find inspiration. Listening to a passionate, charismatic speaker can be a moving, even cathartic experience, and one that is sure to unleash some great ideas of your own. And if you can't make it to these kinds of talks in person, there are thousands of videos of inspiring speakers to be found at TED Talks.
This may sound a bit weird and random, but it's a well-documented fact that many people have their best ideas or deepest insights while they're in the shower. It makes sense - you're in a cosy, intimate space with no distractions (presumably), and feeling relaxed and mesmerised by the hot water and steam. Staring blankly at the tiles or the pattern on the shower curtain means your mind is free to wander, and that's often when you can hit the jackpot.
