Prioritising health and wellbeing

Australia has a world-class healthcare system complete with state-of-the-art hospitals, medical centres, doctors' offices and extensive mental health services.

As an international student living in Australia, you will need to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) as part of your visa requirements.

    Healthcare services in Australia

Australia has a wide range of healthcare and support services available if you need them. This includes:

    Hospitals

Australia is home to world-class hospitals equipped with modern facilities and medical professionals who are trained to treat a wide range of medical conditions and emergencies.

In the event of an emergency, dial 000 from a landline or mobile phone for ambulance, fire brigade and police services. The costs of ambulance services will be covered by your OSHC and it’s free to call the police or fire brigade.

    Pharmacies (Chemists)

Pharmacies are widely available throughout Australia. You can get prescription medications, over-the-counter remedies and seek professional advice from pharmacists.

    General Practitioners (GPs)

GPs are doctors who play a vital role in primary healthcare, providing medical services, preventive care and referrals to specialists when necessary. Registering with a local GP is encouraged for routine check-ups and addressing any health concerns you may have.

    Support for your mental health

It’s important to remember that your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and that if you’re struggling, there is plenty of support available for you. You can speak to your GP who can help you create a mental health plan, or there are a range of services you can access, including:
