Transport in NSW

    Students boarding a train

As you prepare to study at TAFE NSW and live in Australia, it’s essential you know what transportation is available so you can get where you need to, easily.

Below is an overview of the transportation options we have in NSW.

    Public transport

NSW has excellent public transport systems, including trains, buses and light rail. In Sydney we also have ferries. Generally, public transport services operate from early morning until late at night, with reduced services during off-peak hours and on weekends.

It’s important to remember that operating hours of public transport will differ depending on the mode of transportation, the specific route and the day of the week.

Before you start your journey, you should check the timetable for your destination and the specific route you want to take. You can do this on the transport NSW trip planner or check out apps such as Trip View.

    Using public transport

To use public transport, you’ll need an Opal card or you can tap on with a debit or credit card.

An Opal card is a smart card ticket that you keep, reload and reuse to pay for travel on public transport. It can be used in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, the Hunter and the Illawarra areas.

You can add money to you card when you are low, and tap on, and tap off to pay your fares on trains, buses, ferries and the light rail.

For further information, visit transport NSW.

    Travel concessions

If your study is fully funded by an Australian Government scholarship, you may be eligible for concession fares on NSW TrainLink Regional services.

Check directly with transport providers to determine if you have international student concession eligibility for their services.

If you’re eligible for concession fares, you must carry a current and valid proof of entitlement. Please note that international students do not receive concessional public transport fares for metropolitan and urban services.

    Driving in NSW

You can drive a car in NSW with your valid and current driver's licence from your home country. You can also get an International Driving Permit in your home country.

Whenever you drive, you must always carry four documents with you.

    These are:

    • your original valid, current licence from your home country

    • your International Driving Permit, or a certified English translation of your licence if your licence is not written in English

    • your passport and visa, or certified copies for identification purposes.

It’s important to note that in Australia, we drive on the left hand side of the road.

It’s important that you understand and follow the road rules when driving in NSW.

    Cycling

Riding a bike is also a great way to get around and travel short distances. Whether you're commuting to work, running errands or exploring new destinations, cycling is a rewarding and sustainable transport option.

Cyclists in Australia have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists, so it’s important to be familiar with the rules. In NSW the law states that you must wear a helmet when cycling.
