OverviewAbout this course
The Advanced Diploma of Marine Engineering (Class 1) - (Motor) will help you to develop the practical skills and in-depth knowledge required to perform various specialised tasks when working as an Engineer Class 1.
Learn to plan and schedule operations and organise safe maintenance and repair procedures, and develop the skills necessary to operate and maintain electrical machinery, electronic control and engine equipment. You will also learn to manage the vessel's administration, including its business, legal and personnel aspects.
This course has been designed specifically to help you meet the licensing requirements of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). While you will also need to meet other requirements, including sea time hours and medical requirements, this course provides you with the skills and knowledge necessary to be prepared.

At TAFE NSW each course has entry requirements. These help us to make sure that your course choice is right for you and help determine your suitability for a course. We want you to be confident in your decision and successful in your studies.
- Year 12 or equivalent
- Academic IELTS 6.0 (with no individual band less than 5.5) or equivalent
Location Requirements:
- Students must be assessed by the Head Teacher prior to being accepted into this course.
Additional Requirements:
- Certificates of Competency in Deck or Engineer Officers courses can only be achieved via a definite pathway. Certificates are issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) as per requirements laid down in Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) a convention of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
- These courses are only part of the prerequisites for AMSA. It is an AMSA requirement to have the specific and necessary training and sea service prior to final oral assessment and the issuing of the Certificates of Competency. Students need to apply for Qualifying Sea Service (QSS) approval from AMSA once they receive a letter of offer from TAFE NSW.

TAFE NSW makes every effort to ensure your Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) needs are met. The level of support you need may be assessed via a review of your LLN skills with written tasks and a one-on-one interview.
To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:
- An intermediate level of fitness and the ability to swim 5 metres and stay afloat for 5 minutes
- A resistance to acute ocean sickness
- The ability to provide your own work clothes, including include overalls, protective eyewear, closed work shoes and sun protection for practical sessions

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). AMSA sets specific requirements for each maritime qualification to ensure you are ready to join the industry.
Once you graduate from your TAFE NSW course, you will be assessed against the relevant requirements through an AMSA examination process. Once you pass the exam and become certified, you will be able to apply for roles and work in the industry.
Graduating from this course only meets part of the AMSA exam criteria. In addition, you will need to meet other requirements including, minimum age, minimum professional sea time hours and medical and eyesight assessments, which need to be arranged by you.

At the start of your course, you will receive your timetable. You will need to study all core units and a range of additional units.
Engineer Class 1 (Motor) = 14 units: 13 core units, plus one unit from Group A
