The Diploma of Screen and Media will give you specialist knowledge and practical experience in the key areas of film, video and broadcast. You'll develop various competencies across screen and media technologies and learn about the roles and practices that make this industry exciting and unique.
You will explore skills like on-location sound recording, story development and digital video editing. You'll also gain practical experience with access to TAFE NSW's high-quality facilities, including film studios and professional video editing labs.

- Academic IELTS 6.0 (with no individual band less than 5.5) or equivalent
TAFE NSW makes every effort to ensure your Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) needs are met. The level of support you need may be assessed via a review of your LLN skills with written tasks and a one-on-one interview. If you need to strengthen your LLN skills, an individual training plan will be created with you.
To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:
- Experience using the basic features of the Microsoft Office suite
- A computer or personal laptop to support the Adobe Creative Cloud suite
- A smart device with applications to create sound and video recording
- An aptitude for both technical and creative work

As part of your learning, you may be required to enter a film or television work site where set and stage construction, dogging and rigging take place.
In Australia, you need a specific licence (this licence is commonly known as a White Card) to:
- Enter a construction site
- Carry out dogging or rigging work (operate plant machinery, cranes or hoists to move large loads)

Additional costs for uniforms, equipment, textbooks and materials (if applicable) range from $300 - $1,000 AUD per course.
Structure and unitsWhat you will study
At the start of your course, you will receive your timetable. You will need to study all core units and a range of additional units.
4 core units plus 11 elective units, of which: at least 9 must be from Groups A, B or C up to 2 units may be from Groups A, B, C, or D or from any currently endorsed Certificate IV or above training package qualification or accredited course.
Core units are the required units that you must complete.
