    The Diploma of Building Design is designed for professionals who want to work as an architectural draftsperson or building designer. Developed in close consultation with the building design and architecture industry, you will gain the expertise that employers are looking for.

    Learn the essential project management skills needed to research construction materials and methods, and consult and deliver small-scale building design solutions in the residential, industrial and commercial building sectors.

    Through a mix of theory and practical coursework, learn to: 

    • Use 3D CAD software (Revit and ArchiCAD) to produce digital 3-D models of building designs
    • Promote sustainable building design and evaluate construction materials and methods for sustainable building projects

    • Understand and review government regulations, codes and standards regarding various building projects and document preparation

    Additional costs

    Additional costs for uniforms, equipment, textbooks and materials (if applicable) range from $300 - $1,000 AUD per course.

    Structure and unitsWhat you will study

    At the start of your course, you will receive your timetable. You will need to study all core units and a range of additional units.


    To achieve this qualification, competency must be demonstrated in 12 units of competency consisting of 9 core and 3 elective units. Electives are to be chosen as follows: all three units from the electives listed below, or two units from the electives listed below,
    any current accredited course provided the unit contributes to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome and does not duplicate the outcome of another unit used to achieve this qualification.

    You may gain entry to another university using your TAFE NSW qualifications. Acceptance and the amount of credit transfer may vary depending on the university and course studies. Check your credit eligibility.
