Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)
What is the Adult Migrant English Program?
The Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) can help you to learn English. The AMEP provides free English lessons and childcare to eligible migrants and refugees.
The Adult Migrant English Program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs.

What will I learn?
You will learn English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, for everyday living, for work, and for further study. You will also learn about Australian society, culture, customs, and work within Australia.
How can I study?
There are lots of AMEP study options. You can study at a TAFE NSW campus during the day or evening, on weekdays or in Saturday classes. TAFE NSW campuses also offer some online classes. You can also study by distance learning and/or with a volunteer tutor.
How do I know if I am eligible?
You can call us, or visit the AMEP office at a TAFE NSW location near you, to learn if you are eligible for the AMEP. Please bring your visa and passport with you.
How do I start?
You will need to attend an interview at one of our TAFE NSW locations, so we can assess your English level and arrange a suitable learning plan for you. If you have arrived in Australia after 1 October 2020, you must register within six months of your visa commencement date or arrival in Australia.
Is childcare available?
We are able to arrange childcare, allowing you to attend AMEP classes. Free childcare is available for children younger than school age.
Can I work while studying?
Yes, TAFE NSW can arrange a study program to fit around your work schedule.
Are there any special programs?
There are general English courses and courses to prepare you for work. The Pathways to Employment Program (PEP) courses have a vocational subject and work experience component. These courses can help you to work in aged care, hospitality, childcare, and other kinds of work.
